TOPIC: FASTING AND PRAYER
 
Key verse: Mark 9:29 “…This kind cannot be driven out by anything but PRAYER AND FASTING”
 
What is fasting? Fasting is a religious duty of abstaining from food for a period of time (in prayer) as a practice of humility, total surrender, self denial and spiritual discipline.
 
1.     SHOULD FASTING BE PRACTICED IN OUR TIME?
Yes fasting should become a lifestyle for our daily walk with our Lord. Matt. 4:5:18,19
 
2.   WHEN SHOULD WE FAST?
a. When there is lest power
b. When things are not moving the way it should
c. When sin and sickness are taking hold
 
3.   THE IMPORTANCE OF FASTING
a.   Spiritual: It is very important to fast and pray, because there is no victorious believer in the bible who never fast. In other to develop a stronger muscle to win a competition, one is advised to be trained. And since fasting and prayer is also a spiritual training, God command us to fast. 1 Tim. 4:7,8
b.   Physical: Scientifically abstaining from food at times will bring some cleansing and good health to the body. And of-cause it will burn some unhealthy fat from the body as well.
 
4.   WHAT TO DO DURING FASTING
           a. An intensive prayer (alone with God) offer unto God 1Tim. 2.1-4
           b. An intensive Bible reading/studying 2 Tim. 3:16-17
           c. Listening to a worship and gospel messages (tapes/cds)
           d. Forgiving ALL (incl. Yourself) who has coursed you pain Matt.5:23-26
           e. Help the poor and needy Isaiah 58:7
           f.  Give a special offering unto God (the church) Luke 6:38
 
5.   THINGS NOT TO DO DURING FASTING
a.   Do not break your fast before the appointed time (obedience is better than sacrifice)
b.   Abstain from sex and any other lustful attraction.
c.   No chewing of gum, toffee, tea etc. (water can be drunk)
d.   If possible don’t visit a worldly noisy area
 
6.   PHYSICAL CHANGES DURING THE TIME OF FASTING
      a. Headache,   b. Bad breath,   c. Dizzy,    d. Weakness,    e. Quick anger etc.
g. Temptation of many kinds,    g. Temptation to break the fast before time
 
7.   SOME FACT ABOUT FASTING
a.    Supernatural visitation Matt. 4:1-11
b.    Fresh (Anointing) Power is released Acts. 10:38
c.    Humility and Self-control Gal. 5:23
d.    Breakthrough happen in fasting time
e.    Sins are forgiving and mercy of God is shown in fasting Janah 3:5-8
f.     The devil is cast out during fasting Mark 9:29
g.    Struggles over sin is overcomed during fasting
h.    Healing take place
i.     The manifestation of the Holy Spirit is seen
j.     Yokes are broken in fasting.  Isaiah 10:27
 
8.   DEFFERENCE TYPES OF FASTING
a.   Dry fast: This a fast without food or water for a period of time (max. 3 days)
b.   Fruits fast: This type is when one decided to fast for a very long time.
c.   Water fast: This fast is when one is alowed only to drink water during the fasting period.
 
9.   HOW TO BREAK A FAST
a.   After spending a quality time in prayer, make sure you take a warm shower and clean your mouth.
b.   Spend an hour or more in the last moment before you break your fast.
c.    Break your fast with in the presence of God with water, bread, juice, milk etc.
d.   Thank God and believe Him to give you power to go on to the next day.
